If the Shoe Fits

If the Shoe, or in this case boot fits, buy it in every colour.  You may remember this outfit and the olive thigh high boots I wore.  You see, I have really long legs and boots that claim to be over the knee don't apply to me.  Then I found these boots and fell in love with the length of the shaft, the casual heel height, the comfort, and of course the added layer to keep my legs warm when I do venture out of hibernation. So far I've only seen the two colours but I'll be keeping my eyes open for more next winter.

Clean and Healthy Waffles

Healthy and waffles in the same sentence?? Is there really such a thing? Indeed there is thanks to these babes.  I've been following the girls of Tone It Up for a while and I just love their inspiring and positive outlook on everything, not to mention their rock solid beach bods! Anyway, one of their best recipes is the Protein Pancakes so I decided to break out my heart shaped waffle maker and whip up some waffles for breakfast  this morning.
I'm blaming the weather on the outrageous starchy comfort food cravings I've been experiencing lately, but it's nice to have alternatives that won't sabotage my healthy eating.  I think we can all agree that it's nearly impossible to ignore a craving, so I say, when a craving strikes, do it right.  If you're craving chocolate, indulge in a high quality piece of rich chocolate.  My pick is always Godiva and I usually just need a small taste to satisfy the craving. If it's starchy carbs you're after, opt for the right ones, whole grains, high fibre or in this case, Perfect Fit Protein Waffles.  They satisfied my craving and were a breeze to cook up.

Perfect Fit Protein Pancakes/Waffles

- Half a large banana
- 2 egg whites
- dash of cinnamon
- dash of almond or coconut milk
- 1 scoop of perfect fit protein (or any organic, natural protein powder)
- I like to add a dash of vanilla extract
- cacao chips

Heat up a pan or waffle maker and spray with olive oil.
In a bowl, mash up the banana with a fork.  Add in two egg whites, milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Now stir in the protein powder until you get a thick consistency with as few clumps as possible.
Add the mixture to the pan or waffle maker and cook until browned for about 5 minutes or until you feel it's ready.
*I feel like it takes a bit longer on the heat to reach the level of crispiness and browning I like.  More so than regular waffles or pancakes.
Garnish with a few cacao chips and/or some sliced fruit, drizzle some pure maple syrup on top and Enjoy!

Grammy Awards Best Dressed

Here are my 2014 Grammy Awards BEST DRESSED.  This year I was loving the metallic and crystal embellishments and both Taylor Swift and Chrissy Teigen nailed it.

This dazzling Johanna Johnson golden gown next to Chrissy Teigen's buttery bronze skin was just perfect.  I loved the deep V cut and the simple yet stunning jewels that accented this statement making gown.  She was so beautiful with her no fuss hair and accessories and allowed the dress to have full impact  #Knockout

Tay rocked it in this metallic gold  Gucci gown.  This dress fit her like a glove accentuating her pretty little figure.  It was a sophisticated style but still had enough sexiness to it .  I LOVED uniqness of the crystal overlay and the short sleeves.  She was truly a vision of beauty.

I think the reason these two ladies were my favourites was because of the effortlessness of their whole look.  They each allowed the stunning gowns to do all the work and the rest of their looks were so simple and understated.  This, my friends is what I would call effortless glamour.

Oil Change

A few months ago when I was first introduced to skincare oils, I was adamant that I was not putting that oily stuff anywhere near my face.  After doing some research, I found there were common fears for all different skin types.  Oils are deceiving and most people would shy away from them in fear that: they will make me breakout, my skin is already oily, it will make my face greasy, or I use high end cream moisutizers already that claim to deliver magical benefits.
Well let's address these concerns because oils are so misunderstood but they really pack some serious punch.
Oils will not make you breakout! Infact, applying oil to already oily skin can help manage pore-clogging sebum.  Sebum is essentially what makes the pimple and yes, these oils will curb that oily sebum that your skin produces even if you are already oily.
Oil won't make your skin oily.  It absorbs right into your skin delivering kick ass benefits without leaving a greasy residue. If you're looking for extra moisture and radiance, which I'm sure we all are, oils will deliver and your skin will thank you for it.
My complexion was somewhat lackluster and a dry/oily combination.  Since using oil at night and under my moisturizer/spf in the am, I have seen a major difference in radiance and just generally healthy looking skin.  Also, I tend to have sensitive skin that breaks out easily and there have been no breakouts or funny business at all.  My skin is hooked!
If you're still worried about breakouts on oily skin, try a lighter oil.  Josie Maran makes a lighter version of the one I'm currently using.  Head into Sephora and ask for free samples of different brands to try out but give each one a fair chance to work before you move on.
And last but not least, the most important bonus in my books, these oils are all formulated without the use of any parabens, sulfates, phthalates and GMO's.  Impressive right?!

Oil Change

1) Boscia Tsubaki Beauty Oil: Suitable for sensitive skin, this clarifying and antioxidant rich blend will soften and moisturize your skin leaving you with a healthy looking glow.

2) Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil Light: This is the featherweight version of the original argan oil that still delivers great benefits and has a semi-matte finish that will not clog pores.

3) Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil: This one quenches and calms the skin with omegas that absorb right into the skin for a lit-from-within look.  Your skin will drink this up

4) Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil: Looking for a dewy glow? This one has fast acting vitamin E and essential fatty acids that absorb and moisturize without leaving any residue.  This stuff sinks right in and works well under makeup, sunscreen and moisturizer.

At Home

Happy hump day!  I had a line up of outfit posts for this week but the temps are just too frigid for anything.  I literally am not leaving my house other then to drive and pick up the kids from school.  I've definitely reached my breaking point with this weather.  Who's ready for spring?!
Since I'm not setting foot outside, I decided to do a feature on 11 things you may not know about me. Why 11 you ask? Because it's my husband's lucky number and we do everything in 11's around here. Just a few little fun facts on a cold winter day!

1)  I am a certified Yoga Instructor and a certified Hair Extension Technician - Random right?! I am actively pursuing both.
2) I splurge on handbags and shoes over anything else
3) I used to model when I was a teenager
4) I live by handwritten lists because I am disorganized and forgetful (Quinn probably thinks this should be #1)
5) I have travelled quite a bit but California just gets me every time.
6) I lived in Paris to study french and can speak fluently.  Mais oui c'est vrai!
7) I am not a city girl.  I'll take sand and water over the busy city any day
8) West Coast (BC) native. Hola!
9) Graduated in French studies and Communication studies at York Univeristy
10) I am 5'11 1/4 tall and yes of course I wear heels
11) I am over the moon so happily married to my favourite person on earth.  With him I got 3 awesome step kids and the cutest little puppy whom I am freakishly obsessed with.

Case and point - we can't take our eyes off eachother.

Winter White

We have entered another deep freeze here so I'm glad I was able to take some outfit shots last week when we had more bearable temps.  Confession: I have been living in my hats as of lately.  I love that I can just throw one on and I'm ready to go.  No fussing with my hair, infact I find it looks better with messy, dirty, lazy hair. Definitely makes life easier when it's just too cold to care.
We had a great weekend that was a good mix of busy and relaxing.  On Friday we went down to the boat show and naturally, I picked out a yacht ha! On Saturday I got some shopping in.  I had a few birthdays to buy for and since Holts was on it's last legs of the winter sale, I scored a few things that I'm pretty happy with.  We had cocktails at a friends Saturday night and ended off with dinner at my parent's on Sunday.

Skinny Girl Fiesta

My girlfriends and I have been getting together to watch the bachelor/ette since forever.  We make a point to have dinner and cocktails a few times over the course of a season.  At first it was a big mish-mash of snacks and treats and drinks but over time, we each had our staples that we always brought.  This past monday we decided to give it a theme and coordinated it with Juan Pablo's Latino roots.  We decided on Skinny lettuce tacos, guacamole and margaritas and for dessert we had skinny chocolate cookies and cinnamon popcorn. It was so good, I made it again last night for myself and a normal kid-friendly version for everyone else.

First things first - the Margarita because you can't have Mexican without a margarita.

I love a rainbow of vegetables

For a Margarita, I never use a mix because I don't like sweet fillers in my cocktails.  My favourite cocktails include any kind of citrus, which is why I'm nuts about margaritas..Tequila + lime and in this case grapefruit…I mean, come on!
I had half a grapefruit leftover from breakfast so I decided to squeeze it and add it in with the limes.  The grapefruit took this margarita to a whole new level.

Lime and Grapefruit Margarita
(serves 1)
1 very generous ounce Tequila (I prefer Patron Silver over this Avion brand but don't tell Adrian Grenier and his Entourage posse)
Use half the amount of Triple Sec
The juice of 2 Limes
The juice of half a grapefruit
Salt for rim

Squeeze the juice out of the limes and grapefruit.  Pour Tequila and Triple Sec over ice in a Shaker and add citrus juice.
Shake it up baby
Rim glass with salt
Pour and Enjoy

Skinny Tacos
(Serves 4+)
1/2 - 1lb of Ground Turkey
1 of each sliced Red peper, Yellow pepper, Green pepper (Use 1 small or half a large of each)
1-2 minced Hot peppers (depending on how spicy you like it)
1 can of Organic Corn
1 lb of sliced Mushrooms
1 small diced Yellow Onion
1 pack of Low Sodium Taco Seasoning
Guacamole (homemade preferably)
Boston Lettuce (or any sturdy lettuce)
Hot sauce

In a sauce pan saute onion on low heat.  Add ground turkey and break it up.  Then toss in all peppers, mushrooms and corn. Add seasoning once the veggies have begun to soften a bit.
Cook on low to medium for about 15-20 min.
Meanwhile, dice tomatoes and wash the lettuce.  Now is also a good time to prepare the Margarita!
In little serving bowls serve all the toppings.  I don't really care for cheese or sour cream on mine but go ahead and add it if you want.
Now have fun piling your mixture and toppings onto the lettuce.

**Disclaimer, if you are using the hot peppers for spice, WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER SLICING THEM!!!
I scratched my nose and was in excruciating, burning pain for a long time.  If this does happen to you, dip paper towel in milk and, yes, shove it up your nose.  It works, trust me.

{You could make this vegetarian by simply omitting the meat.  I used very little and could have easily gone without.}

Workspace Transformation

I can vividly remember the sheer excitement I would feel when getting a new pencil case and pencil crayons back in elementary school.  Then in high school and university it was the binders, dividers and mechanical pencils and fancy pens that did it for me.  Shoot forward a few years and now it's agendas and workspaces that get me all giddy.  I remember thinking, well now that I have this new pencil case and fancy pencils, I will be really good about doing my homework.  Or, now that I have this fancy agenda, I am going to be totally organized and on top of my game this year.  And then, a few weeks ago I decided I would give my work space a makeover because heck, if ya have a nice office aren't ya more productive? Well truth be told, I don't think any fancy pencil cases or agendas will change my procrastinating, somewhat dishevled habits but it's fun to play around with ways to motivate and inspire yourself.  I have actually noticed however, that since redoing my workspace I have been much more inspired to blog and create.  Perhaps a fresh clean space really does allow for a fresh clean mind.  If that's the case, I suppose my closet should be next…

Would you believe I installed this shelf all by myself…?

Would you also believe it is hung dead straight?

My friend gave me this basket and now it serves as storage for notebooks and magazines.

Lexie's favourite spot to snooze while I'm working at my desk.

I keep this plaque Quinn had made for me right where I can see it as a daily reminder of how tough I really am.
(Just so ya'll know, I'm jumping over fire in that pic Mmmhmm!)

This darling Kate Spade agenda makes me smile

I added a pretty glass knob to the drawer that originally had nothing on it.
Birthday flowers from a girlfriend that are finally blooming.

Now I'm kind of ashamed to be showing this.  The desk was originally Quinn's and I have yet to find the perfect one so I sanded, primed and painted this one, added a pretty glass knob, some shelves and bins and tidied it up.  Quite the transformation if you ask me.

Not the best pictures but you get the (ugly) idea.
